Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze — Story Summary
Donkey Kong and his family are enjoying a peaceful life on their island when the Snowmads, a band of Viking-like arctic invaders led by Lord Fredrik, attack and freeze the island with powerful ice magic. The Snowmads scatter the Kongs across a frozen archipelago and transform the once-lush home into hazardous, frigid environments.
Donkey Kong, weakened and separated from much of his family, teams up with his longtime partner Diddy Kong plus new allies — Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong — to reclaim their island. The group sails across multiple themed worlds (jungle, volcanic, ruins, tundra, factory, and more), confronting Snowmad captains and overcoming platforming challenges, traps, and environmental puzzles. Along the way they rescue stranded Kong family members and learn more about the Snowmads’ leader.
The final confrontation reveals Lord Fredrik’s personal motives tied to ancient polar spirits and a vendetta against tropical inhabitants, culminating in a boss battle where the Kongs defeat Fredrik and break the freezing spell. With the Snowmads defeated, the island thaws and the Kong family reunites, restoring their home and celebrating their victory.
Originally released for the Wii U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze made its debut on the Nintendo Switch on May 4, 2018. Developed by Retro Studios, this 2D platformer follows the Kong family as they attempt to reclaim their island from arctic invaders known as the Snowmads. The Switch version is considered the definitive edition due to several technical upgrades over the Wii U original:
Step 5: Verify Update Version
In-game, check the title screen’s bottom-right corner or go to System Settings → Data Management → Software → Tropical Freeze → “Version” should read 1.0.2.
Step 4: Install via Emulator (Ryujinx / Yuzu)
- Open Ryujinx → File → “Load Application” → select your base NSP.
- The emulator may prompt for missing updates. Go to File → “Manage Updates” → “Add” → select the Update NSP.
- Ensure your firmware keys (prod.keys) are up to date. Tropical Freeze requires keys from Switch firmware 5.1.0 or higher.
Step 1: Obtain Your NSP Files
Use a homebrew tool like nxdumptool on your own Switch to dump your purchased eShop or cartridge game into an NSP. Dump the base game and the update separately (if you already downloaded the update via Nintendo servers).
Critical Acclaim & Difficulty
Tropical Freeze is famous for its difficulty. It requires precise timing and platforming skills. While the visuals are whimsical and inviting, the gameplay is rigid and demanding, often compared to the "Souls-like" of platformers in terms of the patience required. Step 3: Install via Tinfoil (on Switch)
Pros:
- Impeccable level design with high replayability (collectibles, time trials).
- Stunning art direction and character animation.
- One of the best soundtracks in the genre.
Cons:
- Can be frustratingly difficult for casual players (unless playing as Funky Kong).
- Load times between levels can be slightly longer than average on the Switch hardware.
